Nitrogen in Pollutants

While nitrogen is important for animal and plant growth, too much nitrogen in our water and air can be damaging to the environment and to public health.

For example, an excess amount of a nitrogen compound called nitrate, NO₃^-, can damage aquatic ecosystems and poison drinking water.
